Kevin A. Wheatly, 28. " The Dasher" Wheatly of the AATTV, was the first of four Australians to be awarded the Victoria Cross in Vietnam. A football fanatic who would swallow live goldfish as a party trick, he enlisted in June 1956 and volunteered for Vietnam in 1965. On November 13 1965 "Dasher" and Warrant Officer "Butch" Swanton and ARVN troops were on a search-and -destroy mission in Quang Tri Province when they encountered a large VC force. Under fire, the ARVN platoon broke and ran, but Swanton was wounded as he tried to save an ARVN soldier. Dasher carried his mate the length of a paddy field, to a protected patch of scub, and refused to leave his side. After giving his gun to a retreating Vietnamese soldier, he pulled the pins from two grenades and waited, inevitably, for his death. The bodies were found lying next to each other the following morning. |
