Manning Detalis of "D" Company
A letter from Bill Roche explianing the manning details for me, with some corrections
l must have seen at least 10-15 lists over the years and most seem to
have mistakes. I don't believe I have ever seen a correct / official list of
the boys who were ACTUALLY on the ground at the battle.
There were 'supposed' to be 108 blokes at the battle. Did the 108 include
the Kiwis? I have never seen an actual list. The D Company Manning Chart
is something else as blokes such as Company 2i/c, Capt HI McLean-Williams
were back at base, The Dat, along with Gildersleeve, O'Donnell. It would
appear that there were 15 of the total company strength who were not at
the Battle. Some must have been on R&R, Sick, Work parades, Saigon Guard or whatever.
I have met a lot of blokes (since) who purport to have been at/to Long Tan. You mean at the Battled Ar, Uuummmm, ahh, well no, not exactly!
